Working together
South Greenwich Forum is an information exchange working for the community of the south of the borough of Greenwich. Any local group, however small, or any borough wide group serving the south, is able to affiliate.

South Greenwich Forum is an active member of Greenwich Community Network, the community 'voice' on the strategic Greenwich Partnership, and updates Forum members on events and progress regularly.

Community and voluntary sector groups in the south of the borough have the opportunity to be represented on the Network through one of the two South Greenwich area networks (East & West) or one of the 13 'people' networks:
  • Tenants & Residents
  • Elders
  • Women

  • Disabled People
  • Children & Families

About South Greenwich Forum

South Greenwich Forum was formed in 1983 to help redress the obvious lack of community facilities and resources in the south of the the London Borough of Greenwich. The Forum is an umbrella organisation of community groups and voluntary sector agencies in, or serving, the south, and concerned to improve local community facilities. Acting as an 'enabler' it has helped groups to establish themselves, it has helped groups with projects and it has helped groups transform an idea into a project. Many members are active volunteers in the local community, and so know at grass-roots level just what is of importance to local people.

What is an Information Exchange?

Groups bring information on:

  Projects                     Events                    Problems

Working together Forum members exchange their know-how and different experiences, and help other groups by publicising events and information. If a member group is experiencing problems with a project the Forum can elect to combine forces to problem-solve, to campaign etc.

Members work together on consultation documents, and frequently submit a joint response, although that does not stop individual groups making their own specific comments as well. Member groups monitor a wide range of community provision, and talk tp 'providers' if they want more information, or when they feel there could be improvements.

Working together
The Forum recognises that it is not always easy to fit in yet another meeting on a regular basis. Minutes are always written so that member groups are kept fully informed, with advance notice of visitors, discussion items etc. and so they can attend the Forum meetings of most importance to them.

Forum Interests and Projects

Forum member groups have a wide range of interests - health, hospitals, leisure and libraries, general and community education, young people, the environment, community safety, services for older people, social service, benefits advice, our local heritage and Eltham Town Centre.

The Forum has campaigned to improve facilities seen by member groups to be lacking or at risk, and an early major achievement was the opening of St Mary's Community & Resource Centre in Eltham High Streeet. The Forum was the instigator of Eltham's annual multi-cultural festival.

Working together The Forum acts as an enabler, helping groups with a project, or helping those with an idea to form it into a project.

Traffic Management

The Forum has also set up a Traffic Management group which meets on the fourth Monday of January, April, July and October for informal discussion of traffic matters related to the south of the borough. These meetings give member groups the opportunity to talk through traffic problems in their area, exchanging ideas on possible solutions. The meetings are attended by representatives of the Council's Transport & Highways Department, and this joint working has proved very worthwhile.
